Plum Cottage is in the peace of the country-side,  away from the hustle and bustle of London and yet still near enough to visit for the day. It is very convenient for Alton or the city of Winchester, which was the Capital City of England before William the Conqueror. The Watercress line for steam trains has a station in Medstead. Other places within an easy day's visit are Salisbury, Stonehenge, Portsmouth, the Royal Horticultural Society's Wisley Gardens and many stately homes.
